「豪小子」林書豪在NBA征戰多年，最常被問到的問題之一就是美國社會對於亞裔球員的「歧視」問題。日前他參加CBS電視台的「Boomer & Carton show」節目時，再度被主持人問到此題目，由於主持人舉了JR史密斯為例子，認為不少人都跟史密斯一樣帶有異樣眼光，也因此外界點名史密斯就是始作俑者。
對於這個問題，林書豪當時沒有否認也未承認，他表示自己沒有跟史密斯談論過此話題，所以很難回答。林書豪說，唯一能透露的是，一路走來社會上對於亞裔人的歧視一直都是自己的難關，「這就是一把雙面刃。」
「豪小子」不諱言指出，種族差異也有好處，「我也有得到不同的待遇。」「林來瘋」如果換到一個普通美國人身上，或許引發不了如此盛大的回應，但因為是亞洲球員卻成了一場傳說。但反過來說，林書豪因種族身分被歧視的時刻也不少。
史密斯立刻跳出來澄清：「我還有去參加ESPYS頒獎典禮支持他，那些說我歧視他的人真是大錯特錯。」
史密斯在「推特」上滅火，由於「推特」有字句限制，史密斯連發三篇文章、就為了澄清這場誤會。他強調：「永遠別把我當作是歧視分子。」
